The Book of Mormon

So it's around 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving night 2009 and I'm blogging.

I'm not going to get on a soap box for what I'm about to say I just want to express this.

On Dec 30th 2007 in church my bishop, Max Behling, challenged the members of his congregation (ward) to read from The Book of Mormon EVERY DAY this next year... even if it was just one verse. If we did this he promised our lives would be blessed and we'd come to know that it is true and have a FIRM testimony that Jesus is the Christ. That the book was written by prophets and not Joseph Smith.*This is a good place to note that I had never read from The Book of Mormon daily even though I was raised a member of the Mormon church. Not even on my mission. I think the most I had gone was two weeks in a row or something.

So the next tuesday Jan 01 2008, I started. One verse (or more) a day til I had completed the Book of Mormon. There were literally weeks where I'd only do one verse. Sometimes a chapter but that was rare. As of Jan 01 2009 I had only made it to page 295. I had no idea when I would finish it but by this point I had read EVERY DAY for a year... no giving up.

I'm pleased to say that today I finished it.

Tomorrow I will start over and read it again... my goal is then entire book in one year and if not by next Thanksgiving New Years Day 2011.

I won't even tell you to read it. I wanted you to know that I have.

If I'm a better person it's because I'm trying to live by the teachings of the prophets found in the Book of Mormon which point me to my savior. Christ is my big bro... and like all little brothers I want to be like my big bro. He's also my redeemer. The Book of Mormon helps me to know him better.

This is what I am thankful for today.

Not much is new

So nothing is really new for me.

More rejections from girls. More flirting in the halls. Lots of the same things in school... assignments, enduring classes, having my mind blown, taking up class time explaining my life.

I did see Couples Retreat with Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman. Last week I saw Zombie Land and loved it.

I'm giving up R rated movies and Myspace.

I watched Arrested Development on DVD and laughed SO HARD! Buster "Who would want to R her?" (while angrily referring to his mom having a rape horn)

So life is just ok and not much is new.

Why I'm a Jerk

So apparently I'm a HUGE jerk for not wanting to go on a date with a girl that is my same height and I assume weight. (as I just found out in my class discussion)
I get that I'm not Brad Pitt but son of a gun why do people try setting me up on dates with girls who look like me and then say "you guys have a lot in common"?
I'm trying to lose weight so if a girl goes to the gym... then yes we have a lot in common. My mom is 5 ft tall and has never weighed more than 125 lbs, she's my example of what the girl I think I will marry will be like health wise and my moms personality rocks. If a girl has an awesome dad then she should look for a guy who is awesome too BECAUSE what she's familiar with is a supportive male role model. How is it different in my case?
I've been rejected LITERALLY thousands of times by girls who know that I am not their type. It hurts and sucks and I wish it wasn't so... but I'll keep asking out girls who seem out of my range until one of them doesn't think that she is (out of my range) and likes the idea of the two of us in a picture frame, smiling and looking happily off to the left.
David Letterman and Cannibals

I have an odd teacher who speaks broken english and is asain. You never know what will come out of his mouth. (br)
SO TODAY we were discussing the David Letterman scandal and talking about how it relates to ethics. NATURALLY after a student made a poignant he abruptly transitions to cannibalism by saying "You know cannibals like to eat people but did you know that they don't like to eat comedians. It's because they taste funny." (br)
It's only 1:30 but I don't think I'll find a better moment in my day today.(br)
My thoughts on the Emmys

Here is my recap of what I thought about this years EMMY awards:

-Way to go Neil Patrick Harris. Not exactly Billy Crystal but a good job and way to make fun of yourself for not winning in a way that was funny.

-I'm a HUGE fan of anyone who thanks the people they were nominated with ESPECIALLY when they do it by name. It must make defeat not feel so crappy.

-Justin Timberlake proves over an over again why he is this generations most talented performer. He's funny, charming and I'd watch him do just about anything.
-I'm WAY BEYOND tired of The Amazing Race winning. We get it... it's tough to film 16 people running around the world.

-Jeff Probst over Ryan Seacrest... tough call but good for Jeff.

-Blake Lively looked HOT!

-Unless you're in the hospital or dead... SHOW UP TO THE AWARD SHOW IF YOU'RE NOMINATED (writer of the mini-series and the director of ER)

-The award for most useless waste of time during the Emmy's goes to... Neil P Harris and the stupid "taking over the Emmy's" during the part where the accountants talk. SO LAME... WHY? Next time just let Tracy Morgan talk about llamas or something.

-How great was the montage where they named the writers before announcing the winner in the catagory of Best writing for comedy variety show... EVEN though I think the writing this year on SNL was superior to The Daily Show.

-HOW DID MOTHER LOVER lose to the acadamy awards? At least the guy acknowledged it in a funny way.

-SO MANY talented people died this year. Some came as a surprise... Ron Silver, the old guy from Shawshank Redemption and Paul Newman were overshadowed by more famous deaths but it was good to see them all honored.

-30 Rock may not be the be best show but it's still very good. PLUS Don Glover is a writer for it and he's a comedic genius!

-The awards went long so I missed the last 3 mins but I found out MAD MEN won.

-I'm happy there weren't any causes brought up or mentioned.

-My favorite acceptance speech was from Ken Howard who won for Grey Gardens... He was SO SWEET when he mentioned his wifes birthday and seemed SO GREATFUL. He was funny and a gentleman and didn't overstay his welcome. He even thanked the woman who gave him a kidney.

All in All I enjoyed it this year even though I would have liked to have seen Rain Wilson AKA DWIGHT SCHRUTE and AMY POEHLER win. But I won't go all Kanye West and say they deserved it MORE.

NEXT YEAR I hope we see Joel McHale, Don Glover and Aziz Ansari nominated too.

What should I do for the next sundance?

I've narrowed THIS YEARS celebs gift to: Kazoo's or Ice cube trays.

What do you think?

"Skippy is cool" (Ice cube trays) or "The sound of awesome is Skippy" (Kazoos)

Let me know.

Do we need love?

We were talking about rights and needs that all humans have and the teacher asked "Do we need to be loved to live?"

I said "Absolutely not. I've gone over 30 years without it and I'm still around."

Now seems like a good time to point out that I'm wearing a "Valentines Day SUCKS" shirt.

Someone said "There is a need all species have to procreate." So naturally I chimed in "Yes but only after marriage according to my bishop"

After that I zoned out and now they're arguing about healthcare. Incidentally I'm wearing my Obama 08 necklace.

Blink 182 Concert

So NO ONE got to meet Travis Barker or Tom Delong... but about 10 people of the 8,000 people got to meet Mark Hoppus (the funny one). I WAS ONE OF THE 10 PEOPLE.

So I got there at 2 pm and waited there with this really cool couple. The husband (Chris is 24 and lost part of his leg when he was 18) had a fake leg that had this DANG COOL plaster FAMOUS STAR support thing. Famous Star is a clothing line Travis Barker started. Well one of his reps (RANDY) came out, saw it and got a video of it and since I was there I gave a shout out too. Travis gave Randy a bunch of free stuff to give to the 3 of us and said he might come out (but never did).

Meanwhile, JUSTIN who is the PR/Media guy who travels with CHESTER FRENCH (one of the opening acts who sound GREAT), after talking to him asked me run him to a store... IN EXCHANGE HE GAVE ME A FREE TICKET TO THE SHOW!!!

Also before the show TAKING BACK SUNDAY was outside playing frisbee with thousands of fans around but none of them came up and said hi. I WAS SO EMBARASSED FOR UTAH. You go to the show and the opening act, granted not huge BUT YOU DID SHELL OUT 55 bucks AND YOU GOT THERE EARLY ENOUGH TO SEE THE OPENING ACT, is chilling outside... go say hi and be nice! They were WAY NICE!

Recap of the show:

Chester French were heckeled by A-Holes.

Taking Back Sunday sounded great with good energy.

Tom Delong has a potty mouth.

Mark Hoppus is still funny and the main talent.

Travis Braker is still the soul of the band and can drum like no other! PLUS for the encore they hooked up him andthe drum set and he played in mid air above the audience!!!

I'll post my recap of this on youtube!

Thanks all!

This Weekend and Blink 182

So weird weekend.

Friday night I went to a dance, met a "cougar" (the hot 30+ yrs old variety... not a BYU) and we made out.

Sat I worked and went dancing but because the BYU cougars won there wasn't many people at the dance.

TODAY I texted, called and pulled a Skippy on the Cougar. So now that she's never going to talk to me again, I'm left remembering why I'm still single. Oh yeah, THIS is why.

MOVING ON...

Tomorrow is the BLINK 182 concert. I'll be showing up at 2-ish to try to meet them at the soundcheck. As of now I don't have tickets. What are my odds of doing it? On Tuesday I update the results or you can follow me on TWITTER to see what happens throughout the day.

My Classes

So the new semester is off and running.

I haven't read one word in one book since I haven't bought them yet.

The girl situation is semi-optimistic. There are enough cute girls in all of my classes combined to keep me occupied on something OTHER than school work BUT I haven't decided if I want another form of homework.

There are girls at church, at country dancing and on facebook that I need to weed through and see if I stand a chance with.

Time has taught me that girls can tolerate me one dance at a time OR 3/4 of a date at a time or a few IM convos on facebook at a time... UNFORTUNATELY for me, a relationSHIP requires one to be able to keep a girl for longer than that.

I have one teacher who is from an asian country but refuses to say which one.
I have one teacher who I go to church with and who is being tried like job in her personal life but never shows it in class.
I have one teacher who is liberal in his thinking and conservative in what he allows in his class. He has us trained and scared.
I have one teacher who has us circle up and encourages us to share ideas.
AND
I have one teacher who is currently sitting indian style on the table in front of class wearing flip-flops and who wishes he was in Hawaii.

I should probably be listening.

OK... bye for now!
